How to hibernate in Windows XP?

Hibernate is a very useful option because it saves the status of your Windows XP session (all the programs and documents you have open) to the hard drive, so it can automatically restore it the next time you power up (even if you pack you PC use it after an year!).  Here's how to access and use it:
  • Make sure you're logged onto your PC as Administrator or as a user with Administrator rights.

  1. To enable hibernate goto Start > Control Panel > Power options.

  2. Now you'll see a window somewhat like this:

Now click on Hibernate tab and check Enable hibernation under Hibernate options. Then apply these settings.
  3. Click on "Start" and navigate to "Shut Down." You will see three options--Standby, Turn Off or Restart. Hold down the "Shift" key on your keyboard and "Standby" will switch to "Hibernate." Click on "Hibernate" and your system will then go into Hibernation mode. It will take a few seconds to a few minutes to enter that mode, in which case your system will shut down.

If Hibernate still doesn't appear, it may be because your PC is fairly new and supports the Stand By low-power shut-down option.
